KOMET USA’s story is an interesting one. Many within the dental industry never heard of KOMET USA, but were using their rotary instruments for years because they were sold under another name. In early 2008, KOMET USA continued its efforts in informing the US dental market on who they were and how they will succeed.

Rotary Instruments the KOMET USA Way

KOMET USA hit the U.S. Dental Market running 18 months ago, and they haven’t slowed down one bit. In their first year of operation, several of its products have already received high accolades. Dental Lab Products listed GSQ Tungsten Carbide Cutters one of its Top 10 Products for 2007; Dental Products Report listed Q-Finishers one of its Top 100 Products for 2007; and S-Diamonds was given “Recommended Products” status by Dental Product Shopper in 2008. For a dental manufacturer that started in the United States in January 2007, KOMET USA has quickly become a force to be reckoned within the industry.

Although they are new to the U.S. Dental Market, KOMET USA’s success is not a huge surprise. Their parent company has been manufacturing rotary instruments at its headquarters in Lemgo, Germany since 1923. The KOMET brand has been embraced by the dental industry for more than 80 years. With its U.S. sales and marketing offices located in Rock Hill, S.C., KOMET USA sells directly to clinicians.

KOMET is one of the few dental manufacturers that can sell direct and ship product across the Atlantic Ocean, with virtually no back orders, proving that it is truly a global company. In addition to creating its infrastructure and hiring a highly dedicated consultative sales force, KOMET USA has targeted aggressive growth patterns and sales, worked with universities and teamed up with key clinicians making them proficient partners in research and training.

KOMET USA strives to provide the right rotary instruments for the right procedures. That’s why they encourage clinicians to bring their cases, techniques and solutions to KOMET USA and provide feedback right from the field. With input from Dr. Domenico Massironi of Milan, Italy, KOMET designed its Sonic Tips for crown finishing, an innovative combination of rotary instruments and sonic tips that can produce an exact marginal seal and site preparation. KOMET also worked with Dr. Donald Alexander of Jacksonville, FL in the design of the Crown Prepping Carbides. The instrument’s residual finish allows for both gross and finish work to be accomplished using the same instrument. Prior to launching any rotary instruments, all KOMET products undergo extensive tests and measurements in its R&D laboratories. These highly specialized instruments empower practitioners to solve problems and facilitate new techniques and methods of treatment.

Besides the Sonic Tips and Crown Prepping Carbides, KOMET USA introduced a wide variety of rotary instruments in 18 months.
• The CeraBur™ K1SM eliminates the use of explorers and spoons for evaluating decay removal. As the K1SM allows for superior tactile feeling, it tells the operator when it’s safe to stop drilling.
• S-Diamonds™ combine a structured blank and coarse grit, enabling effective substance removal and improved cooling.
• Q-Finishers™ work on composite fillings which typically involves three finishing steps. Because of the Q-Finisher’s unique toothing pattern, KOMET reduced this process to just two steps, using the Q-Finisher for the first step and an Ultra-fine finishing instrument for the second step. This results in less chair time, greater patient comfort and improved patient care.
• WS Diamond Strips are designed to contour and shape restorations in the interproximal regions providing excellent results.
• K-Stones™ are synthetically bonded and completely interspersed with diamond grit. They are designed to work on various applications ranging from very hard ceramic materials, all dental metal alloys and composites.
• KOMET USA’s two new endodontic burs (H269QGK and 15802) offer dentists different tools to use during this procedure. During the opening of the coronal access area in cavity preparation, the dentist can now achieve straight line access to the root canal for fast and effective lateral shaping of the canal entrance with two burs – one diamond-coated and one made of tungsten carbide.

With a variety of instruments being successfully introduced to the U.S. Dental Market, it proves that KOMET USA’s sales force, researchers and product developers are constantly monitoring industry trends and conducting intensive interviews with practitioners to better understand their needs. This vigorous approach to understanding the dental market drives KOMET to produce modern and advanced products that truly solve the needs and improve patient care. KOMET USA remains directly involved with their customers at all times. As a result, the dental professional benefits from the highest level of knowledge, expertise and service.
